ADL Diversity Series: HOW DO PEOPLE AROUND US RELATE TO JEWS?
Dalet, Hay & Teens Together students and interested congregants will watch the film: "Paper Clips"
When the students of Tennessee’s Whitwell Middle School began studying The
Holocaust as a way to learn about tolerance and diversity, nobody could have predicted the
results. Norwegians invented the paper clip and used it as a symbol of solidarity against the
Nazis. The Whitwell students started collecting paper clips to help visualize such vast
numbers of victims. Over 11 million paper clips were collected and in 2001, the Paper Clip
Project culminated in a unique memorial that changed the lives of those who created it, as well
as touching Holocaust survivors and countless students, adults and communities.
Sponsored by the Julian Cuker Holocaust Memorial Fund and Mitchell and Beth Sargen.

ADL Diversity Series: Shabbat Service with special guest speaker Sandra Roberts
In 1998 Whitwell Middle School principal Linda M. Hooper asked Sandra Roberts to begin a Holocaust Education class that would be the basis for teaching tolerance in a voluntary after-school program. Sandra Roberts held the first class in the fall of 1998. Soon the students were overwhelmed with the massive scale of the Holocaust and asked Ms. Roberts if they could collect something to represent the lives that were exterminated during the Holocaust. Ms. Roberts responded that they could if they could find something that related to the Holocaust or to World War II. Through Internet studies, the students discovered that Johan Vaaler, a Norwegian, designed a loop of metal, and the Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels during World War II as a silent protest against Nazi occupation. The students decided to collect 6,000,000 paper clips to represent the estimated 6,000,000 Jews killed between 1939 and 1945 under the authority of the Nazi government of Adolf Hitler. Ms. Roberts will relate to us the powerful lessons learned as a result of the Paper Clips Project.
This program is sponsored by Norman and Debbie Einhorn and family in honor of the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Allison Einhorn. Thank you to the Einhorn Family and Mazel Tov, Allison!
