Hazzan Arlyne Unger

Hazzan Arlyne UngerArlyne Unger is both Cantor (Hazzan) and Educational Director at BTBJ. Hazzan Unger received her graduate training in Jewish Educational Administration and Cantorial Studies from Gratz College, where she graduated with honors. She also received her MS in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

She is the first and only female Cantor/Educator in the Philadelphia area and is among the first local female Conservative Cantors. She earned the title of Hazzan in 2001. She is a member of the Executive Council of the National Cantors Assembly and serves as Secretary of the Delaware Valley Region of the Cantors Assembly. She is also an active member of the Women Cantors Network where she served as Vice President. Additionally, she is a committed member of the National Jewish Educators Assembly and a Past co-President of its Delaware Valley Region. 

Hazzan Unger has more than 20 years experience teaching in supplementary religious schools, serving as classroom teacher,
music teacher, Junior Congregation leader, B’nai Mitzvah instructor and Youth Advisor. She teaches cantorial skills courses at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Gratz College and has presented various workshops for teachers and lay people on music, prayer and Torah skills.

Hazzan has been married to Ron, a CPA, for 30 years and has two children, Michael and Rebecca.
