Our Building

Beth Tikvah B’nai Jeshurun (BTBJ) has always been a “House of Hope.” Founded in 1956 by a small group of families, the congregation quickly grew into a vibrant center of Jewish life in the Philadelphia suburbs. Just two years later, in 1958, the dream of a permanent home became reality when groundbreaking ceremonies were held on Paper Mill Road in Erdenheim. The first synagogue building was completed in time for the High Holidays, a milestone that marked the beginning of a flourishing community.
As membership expanded, so did the building. A school wing was added in 1961 to meet the needs of a growing religious school, and by 1963 BTBJ was recognized nationally with the Solomon Schechter Award for excellence in Jewish education. In 1973, Beth Tikvah merged with B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue of Mt. Airy, weaving together two proud histories into one strong, united congregation.
Today, BTBJ continues to thrive as an egalitarian Conservative synagogue, home to more than 225 households. Our building on Paper Mill Road is more than bricks and mortar — it is a gathering place filled with prayer, learning, music, and celebration. From its earliest days to the present, BTBJ has been a community built on hope, growth, and belonging.
